Continence vs propreté

Continence vs cleanliness

In the past, this was called “ sphincter training ,” an approach that often involved strict, rapid training . Today, we know that this step is a natural process that requires patience and encouragement .

The term “ cleanliness ” implies that its opposite is “ dirt ,” which can have a negative and demeaning connotation . This association can unconsciously make the child feel that accidents or leaks are shameful or dirty , which is absolutely not the case.

By adopting more neutral and descriptive terminology, this helps to de-dramatize the incident and avoid stigmatizing the child.

In our Montessori micro-nursery, we don't talk about accidents but about leaks and above all, it's completely OK... A leak is simply a normal and expected part of acquiring continence.
